Nothing makes clients happier than feeling like you took the time to design a personalized experience for their event. With Salsa, you can use an overlay to help build the kind of fully customized guest experience to give an event that extra special touch.

Overlays often include branding elements, guests' names, and any design element you can dream up! For extra magic, you can even add a unique border around your images.

But what exactly is an overlay, anyway?

An overlay is a transparent image that sits on top of photos (and other content) that you take. Because overlays sit on top of your photos, you'll need them to be in a format that supports transparency. We recommend the PNG image format.

PNG files can be created with transparent backgrounds. Why does that matter? Well, imagine you have a client that wants to have their logo displayed on the bottom right corner of every piece of content taken at their event.

If you use a file that doesn't have a transparent background, like a jpg, you'll end up with your photos looking like this:

Please do not cover your guests' faces.😔

If you compare that to a photo with a PNG overlay, you'll see why transparent files are important:

PNGs are lit, fam. 🙌🏻

Having a PNG overlay becomes increasingly important as you create multi dimensional templates to lay on top of your content. You want the photos themselves to be visible through your template design, and a PNG file is the only way to make sure this happens.

If you're interested in creating your very own overlays for your events, Canva is a reasonably priced way for you to design and download transparent PNG files. With easy to use features, you can design beautiful, customized overlays sure to wow your guests.

To use Canva, start by entering in custom dimensions so you’re sure that the file is appropriately sized. You want your overlay to be 2048 by 2732.

Take a look:

Now that you've entered in the dimensions, you can get started on your custom design.

Take a look through the elements in the left hand tools section to create a theme for your event. See the arrow? It points right to the search bar, and you can search for any element you think will fit your theme.

Play around with the templates and elements to create a design that works for your event. Be careful that your actual background is transparent. Read here for instructions on how to make your background in Canva transparent.

If you'd like to have a border around your photo, it's easy to do!

To add borders to your design, follow these steps:

  1. Open your design and go to the Elements tab.
  2. Enter ‘borders’ in the search bar.
  3. The various borders will appear in the search results. Click on one to add to your design.

Here's a little screen recording showing how to create a basic border with a transparent window. This window is where your captures will show through:

You can also add any other elements, like text, graphics, or photos to your heart's content.

Once you have your overlay created, you can download it as a PNG by tapping the download arrow:

Be extra, triple, super sure this file is 2048 pixels wide by 2732 pixels in height, and in a transparent PNG format. Check off that Transparent background box!

You'll need to save your overlays to your iPad. Using email or AirDrop are reliable ways to transfer and then save your files to your iPad’s camera roll.

Your finished product will look something like this:

Wait, why is the background black? 😕

But if you put that same overlay on top of a photo, it's going to look like this:

Add your Overlay to an Event

Let’s add your new overlay to an event. Here’s how to do this in the:

Salsa iOS App

To upload and enable your brand new overlay in Salsa, head in to your Event Settings.

Tap on Overlays, then tap the Add Overlay text to upload an overlay to use with your event's photos.

Once you’ve selected the overlay you want, tap on Select to choose it. Don’t forget to enable it!

Take a few test shots to make sure that your overlay is good to go. If things aren't working properly, make sure that the overlay you uploaded is a PNG file and that the dimensions of the file are correct.

To add your new overlay to an event using the web app, browse to the event in your browser and click on Configure Event.

After the configure event window opens click on Event Capture Settings and then Overlays

Take a few test shots to make sure that your overlay is good to go. If things aren't working properly, make sure that the overlay you uploaded is a PNG file and that the dimensions of the file are correct.

And that's it! You're really nailing this whole event thing.
